Nah. This one never worked for me. It seems like Paul back then could knock these out like clockwork. Yeah, it was pretty and all, but they were capable of much better.

Like many people without musical training, I tend to hear the vocalist above all else in most songs. And frankly, I don't find this to be a great vocal, either in the actual notes in the vocal, or in how Paul executes it. But the guitar work? Outstanding! The chord progressions (harkening back to the 1930s jazz style of Jerome Kern, et al, as you allude to ) are phenomenal. To anyone who finds the song lacking - If you listen again and concentrate on the guitar work (including the bass), you might be a little more impressed.
Perhaps this is Paul's biggest contribution in this song (and the "Granny Songs" that get mocked) - to expose new generations to musical styles that they would not have sought on their own.
